Korean and Chinese Environmental Health Experts Gather Once Again

▷ Resumption of the Korea-China Environmental Health Forum in Beijing, China after seven years since 2018


The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER, President Kum Hanseung) under the Ministry of Environment, announced that it will participate in the 7th Korea-China Environmental Health Forum, held for two days starting from July 16 at the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) in Beijing, China. This forum aims to strengthen the cooperation in the fields of environmental health and risk assessment research between Korea and China.


This event, first held in China in 2012, has been alternately hosted by both countries every year. It was temporarily halted after 2018 due to COVID-19 and other reasons. But last year, it was decided to resume for the first time in seven years following an agreement between the heads of environmental research institutes of both countries. 


This event aims to share the current status of research on the health impacts of environmental pollution between the two countries and to strengthen cooperation. A total of 13 related policies and research studies on the theme of “Environmental Health and Risk Assessment Research” will be shared. 


Korea will introduce projects such as the establishment of children’s exposure factors data*, which is being promoted as an international cooperation project, and studies on the residents’ exposure around industrial waste incinerators. China will present on environmental exposure related activity patterns of Chinese population and case studies of risk assessments in areas contaminated by petrochemicals. 

* A variety of information used to estimate exposure levels to environmental pollutants, such as body weight, breathing rate, body surface area, exposure duration, etc.


In addition, the National Institute for Environmental Studies of Japan, which has been invited to this event, will share Japan’s policies and research progress in the field of environmental health.


Shin Seon-kyung, Director General of the Environmental Health Research Department, stated, “The resumption of the Korea-China Environmental Health Forum after seven years is highly significant. Through this event, we will share the environmental health issues faced by both countries, discuss scientific response strategies, and create an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between the two nations in the future.”
